Ghiringhelli's Celebrates One Year of Business in Novato

Novato's Ghiringhelli Pizzeria Grill and Bar will be celebrating one year in business Jan. 13 and is hosting a "dine and donate" event to benefit the Novato Theater on Jan. 17.

The restaurant's one-year anniversary will include all-day happy-hour pricing, complimentary finger foods from 4 to 6 p.m. and music by guitarist-vocalist Sean Carscadden and Allison Harris and the Barn Owls. Both events are in the books thanks to Mike Ghiringhelli, who opened the eatery four years after moving to Novato from Fairfax.

"I lived in Fairfax for 48 years," Ghiringhelli said. "I needed a change and Novato was much larger but still had that old-Marin feeling."

We are regulars at Ghiringhelli's Pizza in Fairfax. A stop there for a slice and a salad post soccer, basketball or baseball games (depending on the season) is a weekly occurrence. So, when I heard a Ghiringhelli's in Novato was in the works I expected more of the same. What I didn't know was the new venture included a Finnegan's veteran, and a talented chef who hails most recently from Brix in Napa.

Mike Ghiringhelli, longtime owner of Ghiringhelli's Pizza, and Mark Edwards, previously a partner at Novato's Finnegan's have created a spectacle of a restaurant/bar. The 150-seat space that housed the well-worn sports bar DeSilva's for years has been transformed beyond recognition with large exposed ducts the length of the ceiling juxtaposed with pretty pendant lighting. Think Noonan's meets upscale pizzeria.

With its ambitious scope it is a relief to know the food has not been overlooked. Chef Dindo Borja is a talent and not surprisingly has a pedigree. He has cooked at Tra Vigne, Carneros Inn and most recently Brix. His preparation of interesting grains such as stewed green lentils and farro risotto; mushrooms; and unexpected combinations such as grilled calamari with Dungeness crab, shrimp and ginger elevate this food well beyond your average bar and grill. It is all very accessible, but the chef offers enough twists to keep it interesting and fresh.

Partners transform former DeSilva's into posh eatery

A local entrepreneur and a restaurateur both with proven track records have joined forces and are days away from opening a new establishment in Novato combining pizza with standards like steak and seafood.

Mike Ghiringhelli and San Rafael native Mark Edwards have created Ghiringhelli Pizzeria Grill & Bar and should be open for business by the end of the month in the Nave Shopping Center in the former Novato Boulevard location of DeSilva's Bar and Grille.

"We wanted to create a neighborhood place which you could come to every day, whether for lunch or dinner, and enjoy a good meal," said Ghiringhelli, the man behind the Fairfax eatery and co-owner of a food processing company.

"We think this is the perfect timing. We've both wanted to do something like this in Novato for a while. We're really excited about our plan here. We just wanted to put our energies together."

Million-Dollar Restaurant-Bar to Open in Nave Center

Ghiringhelli's to kick open doors in the next few weeks adjacent to the post office.

Two food professionals and Novato residents, Mark Edwards and Mike Ghiringhelli, are poised to open a restaurant-bar in the next few weeks that will put pizzazz into the Nave Shopping Center.

Edwards, the owner/general manager, is formerly with Finnegan's Marin Bar & Restaurant, the California Café chain and the PlumpJack Group. Ghiringhelli, the primary owner, already has his plate full with his Ghiringhelli Specialty Foods in Vallejo and owns a small pizza place and wine bar at 45 Broadway in Fairfax.

The new place is called Ghiringhelli Pizzeria Grill & Bar and Ghiringhelli has made an investment of nearly $1 million.
